How to Get Your First Client as a Nigerian Creative

Practical steps to land your first freelance client in Nigeria — from building a portfolio to pricing your work with confidence.

The Hardest Part Is the First Client

Every successful Nigerian freelancer remembers their first client. The challenge? You need a portfolio to get clients, but you need clients to build a portfolio.

Here's how to break that cycle.

Step 1: Build a Portfolio Without Paid Clients

You don't need clients to have a portfolio. Here's how to build one from scratch:

  • Create work for fictional brands — Design a logo for "Lagos Coffee Co." or edit a video for "Abuja Fitness Club"
  • Redesign existing brands — Take a local brand you think could be improved and redesign it (label it as a concept)
  • Volunteer for NGOs or churches — Many non-profits need creative help and will give you real-world experience
  • Do a family or friend's project — Even if you do it for free, it counts
Put your 5 best pieces in a portfolio. Quality over quantity.

Step 2: Set Your First Price

The biggest mistake new Nigerian freelancers make is either:

  1. Charging too little (devaluing themselves)
  2. Charging too much (scaring clients away)
A good starting rate for your first clients:
  • Graphic design: ₦10,000 – ₦20,000 per project
  • Video editing: ₦15,000 – ₦30,000 per project
  • Photography: ₦20,000 – ₦40,000 per session
As you build reviews and experience, raise your rates every 3–6 months.

Step 3: Use Kreative Haven

Create a complete profile on Kreative Haven:

  • Add a professional profile photo
  • Write a strong bio explaining who you are and what you do
  • Upload your portfolio samples
  • Set a competitive hourly rate
  • Add all your skills
A complete profile gets 3x more views than an incomplete one.

Step 4: Write Winning Proposals

When you apply for jobs on the marketplace: Don't write: "I am a skilled graphic designer with 3 years of experience and I will do a great job..." Do write: "I've looked at your brief — you need a logo that feels modern but trustworthy for a fintech audience. I'd approach this by [specific idea]. I've done similar work for [related example in your portfolio]. I can deliver in 5 days for ₦25,000."

Be specific. Reference their brief. Show you understood the job.

Step 5: Get Reviews

After your first project:

  • Ask the client to leave a review on your Kreative Haven profile
  • Deliver on time (or early)
  • Go slightly above expectations on your first few jobs
Reviews are your social proof. 5 strong reviews will get you more clients than any marketing.

Step 6: Leverage Your Network

  • Tell everyone you know that you're available for freelance work
  • Post your work on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram with relevant hashtags (#GraphicDesignNigeria, #VideoEditorLagos)
  • Join Nigerian creative communities on WhatsApp and Telegram
  • Share your Kreative Haven profile link in your bio

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ghosting clients — Always respond, even if it's a "no"
  • Missing deadlines — Reliability is your biggest competitive advantage early on
  • Not having a contract — Always use an escrow platform that documents the agreement
  • Doing work before payment is secured — Use Kreative Haven's escrow so you're protected
